The 9 Best Moroccan Cities
Marrakech
Marrakech is one of Morocco’s largest cities. It has 1,545,541 inhabitants and is positioned 466 meters above sea level at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. It has several World Heritage sites. Along with Meknes, Fez, and Rabat, it is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities.
It was constructed in 1062 by the Almoravids and served as the capital of the Almoravid and Almohad Empires. Djemaa el Fna, the city’s largest traditional market (suq), is also one of Africa’s and the world’s busiest squares. In the square, acrobats, storytellers, water vendors, dancers, and musicians perform. The space is turned into a large open-air restaurant with food sellers at night.
Merzouga
Merzouga is a tiny town in Morocco’s southeast, around 35 kilometers from Rissani, 45 kilometers from Erfoud, and 60 kilometers from the Algerian border.
The settlement is the most well-known of Erg Chebbi, a sub-Saharan erg, and is so on the itinerary of many tourists visiting Morocco. Merzouga also contains Morocco’s largest natural body of water. Merzouga was hit by disastrous flash floods in 2006, displacing 1,200 people and killing several.
Other communities near the Erg Chebbi dunes are Hassilabied (4 km), Tanamoust (3 km), Takoujt (1.5 km), Khamlia (7 km), and Tisserdmine (15 km).
Fes
Fes, after Casablanca and Rabat, is Morocco’s third biggest city, with a population of 1,112,072 people according to the 2014 census (gentile: fasi, fas, or fec). It is the Islamic capital of Morocco, as well as the capital of the Fez-Boulemane area and the Fez prefecture.

The shortened form of the city’s name was first recorded in Spanish as Xauen, although Chauen has become more popular in recent years.
Rabat
Rabat is Morocco’s capital as well as the capital of the Salé-Kenitra region. It is situated on the southern side of the Atlantic Ocean, near the mouth of the Bu Regreg river, which divides it from adjacent Salé. Rabat’s history began in the third century BC with a hamlet called as Chellah on the banks of the Bu Regreg. The Romans conquered Chellah in 40 B.C. and transformed it into the Roman colony of Sala Colonia. The colony was held by Rome until AD 250, when it was handed over to Berber kings, who played a key part in Muslim Spain.
Essaouira
Essaouira is a Moroccan port city on the western Atlantic coast, north of Cape Sim. It is the capital of the same-named province in the Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco. With a population of over 70,000 people, the medina or old center has been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2001.
The local economy is based on tourism, fishing, the wood, textile, and food industries, as well as the trade in handicrafts, marquetry, and jewelry in particular. It has a gas pipeline as well as an airport. Essaouira holds the Essaouira Gnaua and World Music Festival every year, which draws thousands of people.
Casablanca

Many films, many of which are related to the story, were shot in and around Ouarzazate, including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Star Wars (1977), 007: High Voltage / His Name is Danger / The Living Dawn (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Kundun (1997), Legionnaire (1998), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), The Kingdom of Heaven (2006).
Tangier
Tangier is a Moroccan city in the north, near the Strait of Gibraltar. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima area and is bathed in the seas of the Atlantic Ocean. It was an international protectorate known as the Tangier International Zone for most of the twentieth century, until the city was absorbed into Morocco upon the country’s independence.
Tingé was the wife of the giant Antaeus, the Libyan king, son of Poseidon and Gaia, who was defeated and killed by Herakles, and the city would be founded by Yassinde Doudou the Lixurian, comrade-in-arms of the great Oussy the Numidian, who was buried near her, according to the Greco-Roman mythological tradition collected by Plutarch.
Syfax or Sófax, and Tingis would be the wife of the Berber hero Anteo. In reality, you can still visit the so-called “Hercules grotto,” 14 kilometers west of Tangier, one of the most popular regional tourist destinations, where Hercules is claimed to have rested before the work of cutting the apples of the Garden of the Hesperides.
